I made a thing.
With fabric twine.
I am sure you all have seen the tutorials on how to make fabric twine. I love the way it looks! I also have a bunch of fabric cut offs and bits and bobs to use to make fabric twine. So, like a lot of you, I made a bunch and now (like a lot of you) I am wondering what to do with it.
While sorting through my craft stash, I found a bit of wire, already bent into a round shape.
Not really sure where it came from, or what it was for. All I know is, it has been kicking around the house for way too long and I finally needed to use it or lose it.
For a while now I was also looking to make a new wreath for my front door. Well that was fortuitous.
However, I didn't want the usual fake flower wreaths. I wanted something different, something lighter, something fun and funky and matching my hippie persona.
Well. What better than a peace sign?
I really think it's cute. I even made a second one for my friend Sandy (of Homestead wool and gifts). I took photos along the way, so you can make one too! ✌☮
You need:
🟢 Wire. I had this around. Not sure what it is called or what gauge it is, but dollar store sells wire wreath forms, or you could bend a wire hanger. Mine is cm in diameter. You can make it bigger onvs., or smaller.
🟢 Scissors to cut the twine
🟢 Fabric twine, or regular twine, if you don't have the fabric one.
🟢 A glue gun
🟢 I needed tape to secure the ends of my wire together, if you use a wreath form, you may not need that.
How to:
First secure the ends of your wires to the round by taping them together. I ran out of painters tape, so I used scotch tape. It worked for me, since my wire was already nicely shaped. If your wire is more obstinate, you may want to use something stronger like duct tape.
Then I left a little tain of twine hanging off, so I could tie the bow at the end. You can simply wrap the form and add the bow later, but this worked for me.
Add a dab of hot glue and start wrapping the wire. I added hot glue in increments as I went along. I made sure I put the hot glue on the what would be the back side of the wreath, just in case it squished out.
Once the whole form was covered, I hotglued the ends to the front and tied a bow.
Next you have to measure how much twine you need for the center stem in the piece sign. I wanted this part to be thicker than the rest, so I plied the twine back onto itself, which also gave me a nice hanger loop on top. I measured the twine double first, so it would stick out on top a bit, then twisted it back onto itself and then cut it after making sure it was indeed enough.
Now I glued the top of this piece to the back of the form, right behind the bow, so the loop would stick out on top and make the hanging loop. Then I pulled it taught (not too hard! But you want it straight!) And hotglued the bottom. Make sure you glue it straight!
After all that was done, the two side bars were next.
Measure generously between the sides of the wreath and the center stem to get an idea of how long a piece you need. I wrapped it around the center stem at about the height I wanted them to intersect to give it more stability. (I think you could simply glue it across the center stem in the back though, if you run short of twine.)
The side peices cross in the back of the wreath, then go out towards the sides of the form. Figure out what angle you want them to go before cutting the piece to ensure you have enough length. I secured it first to the center stem.
Put a small dab of hot glue to the front of the center stem at the height you decided upon.. then press the middle of the side bar string onto that dab of hot glue. Now thread the twine ends to the back of the piece and cross them over. Make sure they cross on a downward angle! And secre them with another dab of hot glue on the back.
Pull them straight out at the angle you measured them and with a dab of hot glue secure them to the backside of the wreath. Don't pull too hard to either side, or the center stem will bend.
Clean off the fray bits and presto! ☮✌
Hope this tutorial will spread some peace and inspire ideas of your own on how to use the fabulous fabric twine.
Please stay tuned for some schedule updates coming this Friday, April 9th, 2021.
Sending hugs to all of you who need one.
