Spring is in full swing now and plants are growing everywhere.
Outdoor plants are sprouting and indoor plants may need repotting.
Cute flower pots are hideously expensive! However, take one of the plastic containers small plants come in, or simply an old yoghurt container and give them some curb appeal with a crochet sleeve. Doesn't cost much and looks super cute.â¤
Approximately 55 yards (53m) will actually do! You can use all one colour, or make it a rainbow! It's up to you and your recipients decorating style, I guess.
This pot cover will fit a standard 4 inch /10 cm nursery pot, or any container with the same dimensions (3 inch/8 cm diameter on the bottom and 4 inch/ 10cm diameter on top)
This pattern is free on my blog. A printer friendly odf file can be purchased for $3 in my shop. Thank you for your support! â¤đ
Pattern:
Yarn: dk or light worsted weight scraps (size 3 yarn) in rainbow colours, or any scraps you have, really. You need about 3 yards (2.5m) per regular round and 5 yards (4.5m) for the puff stitch round and about that much for the shell round, maybe a little bit more. You will need approximately 55 yards (53m) overall.
Hook: US K 10 ½ (7mm)
Notions: yarn needles to sew in ends.
Gauge: 7 rounds in single crochet = 1.5 inches (4cm)
Notes:
American terms are used in this pattern throughout.
I wrote a chain foundation round to make this pattern beginner friendly. You can alternatively use the foundation single crochet cast on method for this. Simply use the tail end so sew up the gap when closing the first round. A tutorial for this foundation round is at the end of this post.
Work in ends as you go, so you don't have as much to sew in at the end.
You can work a seamless join instead of sl st to close round by dropping the last loop of the last stitch of the round off your hook, inserting the hook from back to front under both loops of the first stitch of same round, grab last loop, and pull through first stitch. Make the loop big, so you can then pass your yarn ball through that loop and tighten the loop again. Now sl st into first stitch of that round again and work next round as described, starting with ch1.
Stitches used:
Ch = chain
Sl st = slip stitch
Sc = single crochet
Dc = double crochet
Puff stitch: work 5 sc in stitch indicated, drop last loop off your hook, insert hook under both strands of first sc of set of 5 and pull last loop through. Puff stitch created. Work next stitch as indicated.
Instructions:
With red yarn:
Ch 30 and close to ring, being careful not to twist the chains.
Round 1: Ch1, sc in same stitch as joining sl st and in every ch, close with sl st to round (30 sc)
Round 2: Ch1, sc in same stitch as joining sl st and in every stitch, close with sl st to round (30 sc)
Switch to orange yarn.
Round 3 and 4: Ch1, sc in same stitch as joining sl st and in every sc around, close with sl st to round (30 sc)
Switch to yellow yarn.
Round 5: ch1, sc in same stitch as joining sl st, 1 sc in each of next 2 stitches, work puff stitch, *1 sc in each of next 2 stitches, work puff stitch, rep from * around, close with sl st to round. (10 puff stitches and 20 sc)
Round 6: Ch1,sc in same stitch as joining sl st and in every sc around, close with sl st to round (30 sc)
Switch to green yarn.
Round 7: Ch1, sc in same stitch as joining sl st and in every sc around, close with sl st to round (30 sc)
Round 8: evenly increase 5 stitches in this round. Ch 1, sc in same stitch as joining sl st, 1 sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next st, *1 sc in each of next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * around, (35 sc)
Switch to light blue yarn.
Round 9 and 10: Ch1,sc in same stitch as joining sl st and in every stitch around, close with sl st to round. (35 sc)
Switch to dark blue yarn.
Round 11, 12 as round 9.
Switch to purple yarn.
Round 13 and 14 as round 9.
Switch to white yarn.
Round 15 as round 9.
Round 16: Ch1, skip next sc, 5dc in next sc, *skip next sc, sl st in next sc, skip next sc, 5 dc in next st rep from *around. End round with sl st into beg ch 1. Fasten off.

Now all you need is a plant.
Simply propagate your plant clipping with your prefered method (I like water propagation), then grab one of your empty 4 inch nursery pots (we all have them) or a yogurt, or margarine container, soil, pop the sleeve around it and presto! Also makes a Great last minute present, or hostess gift. đ
Happy crocheting!
