Re-rug a makeover story

Spring is on it's way and with it my urge to spruce everything around me up and bathe it in bright, new, fresh ways. Bring in a breath of fresh air as it were. Since we are on a budget, a lot of these renovating and makeover things will be handmade, recycled, or thrifted. Which - to me - makes it even more fun. To do new things with what you have.

I made the upholstery fabric sample rug for my entry way, I tried out a bunch of different things.

Most of them got started and then scrapped again, because there was one thing or another I didn't like about them.

I finally had the idea to finger knit some fabric into giant I cords and use those to make the coiled rug.

Recycling and stash busting and a rug in the end. What's not to like? Said rug got done precisely on the 28th of January, 2020. (Just before covid broke big time.)

Rag rug made from finger knitted I cords which then got coiled and sewn.

The rug was suuuper squishy and soft. Really atreat to step on.

However, it wasn't big enough for the entry way. I ended up popping it in our bathroom "for now" as one does. All under protest from my husband, because "a handmade rug is too nice to get wet". -he got over it.

I really liked that rug. But washing it was a pain. I don't have a sewing machine, so I had to hand sew it. But for some reason I only sewed the bottom of the coils together. I should have sewn through the middle of them.

Which in turn made it sort of bloom upwards every time you washed it and it ended up being hand-wash only.

I like to wash my bathroom rugs frequently. As in every time I clean the bathroom. I don't really aspire to spending that much time on handfasting a heavy rug in my tub.

I have better things to do.

So yesterday I decided to take the old rug apart and start a new one from the fabric.

Re-recycling the old material, which I still loved and which is still very much usable, into something that worked better for the intended use.

The new rug will be a braided one (like the runner I started for the kitchen, but that is another story and shall be told another time.)

The new rug is definitely not as squishy as the old one, but it is going to be a whole lot bigger...since the braiding is using the fabric differently than the knitted coils.

I will post pictures as I go along, latest when. It is done. Can't wait to see how long it will take me.

Is spring getting you into a makeover mood too?

I am also working on new dishrags and a few surprises. Putting together a post with my favourite dish rag patterns for you. Keep an eye out!

Hope you have a great week ahead!
